1. Adult animals that have been exposed to perina- tal hyperoxia, showing loss of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction, associated with early postna- tal oxidative damage that can be corrected with dietary antioxidant. Perinatal hyperoxia damage the function of the carotid body chemoreceptors which is not prevented by antioxidant diet. Plas- ma levels of erythropoietin increased by hypox- ia are unaffected by perinatal hyperoxia. These facts may be relevant in clinical situations such as chronic obstructive diseases and general an- esthesia.
2. Given that leptin is a hormone primarily pro- duced by adipose tissue and plays an important role in the control of food intake and energy ex- penditure, and is involved in obesity and breath- ing disorders such as OSA and recently it has been involved in ventilation control, we have con- firmed that leptin produces stimulation of venti- lation, checking that the ventilatory response is not mediated by chemoreceptors of the carotid body, even though they have receptors for leptin.
3. We demonstrate that adenosine contributes to fix CSN basal activity during CIH, being also in- volved in hypoxic CB chemotransduction. Aden- osine participes in CB sensitization in CB during CIH.
4. Caffeine is a nonselective adenosine receptor antagonist, which are involved in the regulation of glucose metabolism in skeletal muscle and in adipose tissue inhibit lipolysis (obesity). We have seen that: caffeine administered acutely decreases insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle in a dose dependent manner, an effect that is me- diated by adenosine receptors A1 and A2b; also significantly it reduces GLUT4 expression, but not AMPkinasa expression in skeletal muscle.
