SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMMES
Objectives
The strategic objectives of the programme are the following:
• To identify and analyze all those socially determined and relevant aspects for po-
pulation health.
• To favor the transfer of knowledge to NHS for designing and implementing health
policies.
• To promote cooperative research of excellence among groups of the programme,
collaboration between them and investigators, and to enhance the internationali-
zation of activities.

Among the foregoing, the MEDEA/INEQ-CITIES subprogramme stands out. The ob-
jective of this subprogramme is to investigate mortality patterns, distribution and
causes in small areas of Spanish and European cities, as well as the link thereof with
socio-economic and environmental factors.
It consists of three projects with competitive external funding: MEDEA I, MEDEA-
II (Health Research Fund) which focus on studying the Spanish reality, and INEQ-
CITIES (project funded by DG-Sanco) studying a selection of European cities. The
project uses Bayesian methodologies in the study and mortality pattern analysis in
small geographical areas. Five CIBERESP groups participate in this activity under the
leadership of Dr. Carme Borrell (ASPB).
The Observatory of Inequality (ODD) transverse programme is linked to this pro-
gramme.
