Population cancer registry platform

The strategic subprogramme entitled “Multicentre study of population-based cancer

cases and controls” (MMC-Spain) remains the most promising initiative among the re-
search programmes in epidemiology and prediction of chronic diseases. The objective

of the subprogramme is to explore the influence of environmental factors, and the in-

teraction with genetic factors, in five types of cancer in Spain (breast cancer, colorectal
cancer, gastro-esophageal cancer, prostate cancer and chronic lymphatic leukemia).

The study is designed as a multi-case control study with a common control group,

a large sample size (4,000 cases, 3,000 controls) and a single research protocol:
questionnaire, biological sample collection and anthropometric measurements. The

study was and is still externally funded: Transverse Action in Cancer, Specific Action
in Mobility, FIS (ISCIII), European projects, autonomous community projects and an

international project.
