ORGANIZATION
Organizational Structure
The functional structure of the CIBER- Liver and Digestive Diseases is summarized in
Figure 1. Two more concepts have been added to the general CIBER structure: the Ma-
nagement Advisory Committee (advisory body comprised of key players in the field of
hepatology and gastroenterology in Spain), the Assistant Coordinators (who work with
the Program Coordinators to prepare and coordinate the different lines of research in
each Program).

Through the Steering Committee (body comprised of the Scientific Director, the Man- 20
T
ager, the Teaching Coordinator and Program Coordinators), the CIBER establishes R
PO
a multi-year action plan and budget. 80% of the CIBER’s funding is fundamentally E
through ISCIII (Carlos III Health Institute) grants to cover expenses resulting from L R
A
steady hiring of research staff and supporting staff, the acquisition of scientific-techni- NU

cal infrastructure, research staff training, running costs and management costs. Con- A
sortium institutions contribute by supplying facilities, services and some of the staff.

This structure is extremely novel, and it means that CIBERs are centres entirely man- E
ER
aged by the investigators themselves. They establish their own needs, resources, and IB
the temporary execution plan. Highly involved groups with long term commitment to C

CIBER also receive additional funding.
